IUBAT Hosts National Seminar on “Enhancing Global Sustainability and Sustainable Future” with UNESCO Representative and Leading Environmental Experts

The Department of Environmental Science at the International University of Business Agriculture and Technology (IUBAT) successfully organized a national seminar titled “Enhancing Global Sustainability and Sustainable Future.” The event gathered distinguished guests, faculty members, environmental experts, and students to explore solutions for building a resilient, climate-smart future on 10 December 2025. 

The program began with the national anthem, followed by a minute of silence in memory of IUBAT’s esteemed Founder Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr. M Alimullah Miyan and former Pro Vice Chancellor Professor Mahmuda Khanum.

Prof. Dr. Md. Ataur Rahman, Chair of the Department of Environmental Science, delivered the welcome address and keynote speech. He emphasized the urgent need to reform consumption patterns and human behaviour to achieve true resource sustainability.

In her remarks, Prof. Selina Nargis, Treasurer and Director of Administration, IUBAT, highlighted the inseparable link between environmental protection and sustainable development, urging collective action from individuals, industries, and governments.

Faculty members Dr. Md. Shafiqul Islam, Dr. M. Rehan Dastagir, and Dr. Ferdous Ahmed presented research demonstrating the critical role of urban greenery in reducing air and noise pollution in Dhaka. Dr. Sohag Miah, Assistant Professor at the University of Chittagong, shared successful campus initiatives focused on conserving native tree species and engaging students in long-term plantation programs.

Mr. Bidhan Chandra Pal, Founder and Managing Director of Probha Aurora, discussed Bangladesh’s active leadership in the UNESCO Greening Education Partnership. He encouraged participants to develop scalable innovations instead of relying solely on climate compensation mechanisms.

Guest of Honour Masud Iqbal Md Shameem, Director, Department of Environment (DoE), Government of Bangladesh, addressed national environmental policy priorities and regulatory measures essential for sustainability.

Dr. Susan Vize, Head of Office and UNESCO Representative to Bangladesh, shared key outcomes of COP30 in Belém, Brazil, emphasizing implementation, accountability, and youth engagement in shaping the next global sustainability framework.

In his presidential address, IUBAT Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr. Abdur Rab called on every individual, family, and institution to adopt practical, everyday measures for resource conservation. He stated that global commitments only become meaningful when translated into local actions.

The seminar concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Dr. Mariym Sultana Marry, Assistant Professor, Department of Environmental Science. The event ended with the presentation of tokens of appreciation and a group photograph.

This national seminar reinforced IUBAT’s strong commitment to sustainability education through its compulsory Environmental Science course, annual Sustainability Day, and award-winning community initiatives. IUBAT remains dedicated to preparing graduates who contribute meaningfully to national and global sustainability goals.
