9th Death Anniversary of IUBAT Founder Prof. Dr. M. Alimullah Miyan

The 9th death anniversary of Professor Dr. M. Alimullah Miyan, the pioneer of private university education in Bangladesh and the Founder Vice-Chancellor of IUBAT—International University of Business Agriculture and Technology, will be observed on 10 May 2026.

Born on 15 February 1942 in Kailine Village under Chandina Upazila of Cumilla District, Professor Miyan passed away on 10 May 2017. He was born into a proud freedom fighter family and was the younger brother of late Bir Protik Colonel Shafiq Ullah.

Professor Miyan opened a new horizon in the higher education sector of Bangladesh by introducing the concept of private universities in the country. Through his visionary leadership and initiative, IUBAT, the first non-government university in Bangladesh, was established in January 1991.

Professor Miyan had a distinguished academic and professional career. He completed his BCom (Honours) degree from the University of Dhaka in 1962 and MCom degree in 1963. Later, he earned an MBA degree from Indiana University, USA in 1968 and a PhD from Manchester Business School, United Kingdom in 1976.

Throughout his professional career, he served for many years at the Institute of Business Administration (IBA), University of Dhaka, as both a faculty member and Director. He was also the Founder Chairman of the Centre for Population Management and Research (CPMR). From 1963 to 1994, he made remarkable contributions as a teacher, researcher, and institutional development expert. He also served as a Visiting Professor at Ahmadu Bello University in Nigeria.

To observe his death anniversary, IUBAT has arranged various programs on campus, including open discussions and reminiscence sessions on his life and works, doa mahfil, and other commemorative activities.

Professor Dr. M. Alimullah Miyan was a visionary educator and dreamer who brought revolutionary changes to the higher education landscape of Bangladesh. His innovative thoughts, leadership, and contributions continue to inspire thousands of students across the country.
